7 of Tufan’s relatives on remand over Bogra rape
A Bogra court on Monday placed seven relatives of Tufan Sarkar, the prime accused in the Bogra rape incident, on remand of different terms over the incident.
They are Tufan Sarkar’s sister-in-law Marjia Akhtar Rumki, also a Bogra municipality councillor, his mother-in-law Rumi Begum, father-in-law Zamilur Rahman Runu, wife Asha Sarkar, and two of his accomplices Jitu and Munna, and barber Jiban Robi Das.
Rumki has been put on four-day remand, while the rest on two days’ remand.
Tufan, the Bogra town unit convener of Sramik League, the workers’ wing of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League (AL), raped a girl on 17 July after is accomplices picked her up from her residence.
Later, Rumki, her sister Asha Sarker and mother Rumi allegedly beat the girl and her mother with sticks last Friday as the girl approached the councillor for justice after being raped allegedly by Asha's husband Tufan.
Additional chief judicial magistrate Shyamsundar Roy issued the remand order.
Besides, a court in Bogra on Sunday placed Tufan and two of his associates on a three-day remand in two cases filed for raping the girl and torturing her along with her mother in the district town.
Earlier, two cases were filed against 10 persons for raping the adolescent girl, who has passed secondary school certificate (SSC) this year.
The girl had sought Tufan’s help to get admitted to a college for higher education.
One case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act for kidnapping and raping the girl and the other for torturing the girl and her mother to force them to conceal the matter.
Of the 10 accused, nine have been arrested, said superintendent of police in Bogra M Asaduzzaman while addressing a press conference at his office in the afternoon.
He also claimed that police “active” even before the incident was flashed in the media. “Police detained four including the main culprit even before the case was filed.”
Earlier on Sunday, detectives arrested Tufan Sarkar's mother-in-law Rumi Begum, sister-in-law Marjia Akhtar Rumki, wife Asha Sarkar, and his two aides Jitu and Munna from Pabna and Savar while father-in-law Zamilur Rahman was arrested from his Bogra residence.
Besides, barber Jibon Robi Das was arrested as a suspect from Satmatha intersection of Bogra town on Monday afternoon.
The IO, however, did not seek remand for Atiqur, one of Tufan's accomplices, as he gave a confessional statement before a court on Friday night under section of 164.
